How many steps have I walked/run?
You may have tracked your miles in a run or walk calculator but your tracker is oriented as an number of miles. What you might want to find out is how many steps you've walked or run that number of miles. It is for this purpose that we've created this calculator.
The issue, of course, with such a vast generalisation is that it's based upon 'the average' adult/stride for steps to miles. It is said the average stride for men ranges around 2,200 steps to cover a mile, reaching the mile mark in about 17 minutes.
However, this will not be entirely accurate, because calculating an accurate figure for the number of steps you took to walk or run a mile requires you to take into account for a number of different factors, including your gender, height, weight and walking/running pace, as in any crude example, a person of short stature will take more steps to walking a mile than a 6 ft tall person.
Our calculation, and the stride estimate used here, finds a basis in a 2008 study of over 400 people at speeds of walking and running. The study sampled/tests on the number of steps people took at varying speeds of walking and running. Its full results are reproduced below.[1]
- 1 mile average-speed walk = 2,252 steps
- 1 mile brisk walk = 1,935 steps
- 1 mile jog = 1,951 steps
- 1 mile run = 1,672 steps
- 1 mile fast run = 1,400 steps
- 1 mile very fast run = 1,080 steps
Below we refer to step conversions using this data.
