How much is 1 mL in grams?
For water, 1 mL equals exactly 1 gram. For other ingredients the weight will vary. For instance, 1 mL of all-purpose flour weighs 0.53 grams and 1 mL of sugar weighs approximately 0.85 grams.
When you convert mL into grams, there isn't a straightforward, universal answer. That's because mL is a measure of volume (how much space something takes up) and grams is a measure of weight (mass). To bridge the gap, you need to know the density of the ingredient. For water, the conversion is easy: 1 mL = 1 gram. But for other cooking and baking ingredients, they don't share the same density, so the conversion rate will differ.

100 grams to mL
How much is 100 grams in mL? It depends entirely on the ingredient. For water, 100g is exactly 100 mL. For denser items like honey, 100g occupies less volume (about 70 mL), while for lighter ingredients like flour, 100g takes up more space (about 190 mL).
For 100 mL to fl oz, the equivalent is approximately 3.38 US fluid ounces. And for the conversion to cups, you will get approximately 0.42 cups (US).
100 mL in grams
This is what 100 mL equals in grams for key baking ingredients, based on approximate density data from the USDA and other common baking references:
- Water: 100 mL = 100g
- Milk: 100 mL = 103g
- Flour: 100 mL = 52.5g
- Sugar: 100 mL = 84.5g
- Butter: 100 mL = 95.8g
- Honey: 100 mL = 142g
- Olive oil: 100 mL = 92g

50 grams to mL
The amount of mL in 50 grams will depend on the ingredient. For water, 50g equals exactly 50 mL. For flour, 50 grams converts to approximately 95 mL (because flour is lighter and less dense than water). This illustrates why you always need to know the ingredient density for accurate conversions.
How to convert mL to grams
To convert mL to grams, multiply the milliliters by the density (g/mL) of the ingredient being measured. You can also look up the ingredient in the conversion chart above, which lists the grams for different mL values by ingredient.
The basic formula to convert mL to grams is as follows:
As a basic example, 100 mL of water weighs exactly 100 grams (density of water is 1 g/mL).
A further example: 250 mL of all-purpose flour weighs approximately 131 grams. This is because the density of flour is approximately 0.525 g/mL (lighter and less dense than water).
Some common ingredient densities for reference (g per mL):
- Water: 1.0 g/mL
- Milk: 1.03 g/mL
- All purpose flour: 0.525 g/mL
- Granulated sugar: 0.845 g/mL
- Butter: 0.958 g/mL
- Honey: 1.417 g/mL
- Olive oil: 0.92 g/mL
- Vegetable oil: 0.92 g/mL
How to convert grams to mL
To convert grams to milliliters, divide the weight in grams by the density of the ingredient being measured. You can also look up the ingredient in our conversion chart, which lists different mL equivalents for common gram weights (e.g. 100g of honey weighs heavier than 100 mL because honey is denser).
As a basic example, 500 grams of water is equal to 500 mL (density of water is 1.0 g/mL). For 500 grams of flour, you would divide 500 by 0.525, giving approximately 952 mL.
It is important to remember that the density of an ingredient is key to an accurate conversion. Without it, you're essentially guessing.
